Quick Guide to Getting Started with the Neat Desktop Application
Download and install the Desktop Application, then launch the application and connect your scanner.- Select Scanner
Switch between multiple connected scanners - Scanner Settings
Change scan settings like; color mode, 1-sided or 2-sided scanning, and single or multipage scanning - Recently Scanned
View and select recently scanned files to edit and save to Neat or your computer hard drive - Manage Recently Scanned Items

What are the system requirements for the Desktop Application?
- Microsoft® Windows 10 (32 and 64-bit) or Mac OS 10.12 or higher
- Pentium® IV 2.0+ GHz or faster (Dual Core recommended)
- 1 GB RAM; 2 GB highly recommended
- 1 GB of available disk space for installation, 1 GB recommended for user data
- Available USB port
How do I scan and save files to my Neat Account?
- Sign In to your Neat account to scan and send files to your Neat Account.
- OR click Start Scanning to bypass login and scan and send files to your computer hard drive.
- Once logged into your Neat account, click the Scan button at the top of any folder to scan to that folder.
- A new Scan Utility window will appear over your Neat account. Connect your scanner, and scan files to the Neat Desktop Application. Before saving your files to your Neat account, you can edit them. When you are done, select the files you want to save to your Neat account and click Save.
Please Note: If you want to send files to your Neat account and you are not already logged into your Neat account, then click Sign In to Neat at the top right corner of the scanning window to login to your Neat account.
- Choose Neat from the destination dropdown to save your files in your Neat account. Choose My Computer to save your files to your computer hard drive.
Please Note: If you are not logged into a Neat account, then the destination dropdown will be grayed out and the only option for saving files is to your computer hard drive. - When you save files to your Neat account, you can select the specific Neat folder where you want to store them and the item type you want to save your files as. By default, Neat will save the files in the folder you selected in step 3.
How do I scan and save files to my computer hard drive?
- Click Start Scanning (#2 in screenshot) to bypass a Neat account login and scan and send files to your computer hard drive.
- A new Scan Utility window will open. Connect your scanner, and scan files to the Neat Desktop Application. Before saving your files to your computer, you can edit them. When you are done, select the files you want to save to your computer and click Save.
- Choose My Computer to save your files on your computer hard drive.
Please Note: If you are not logged into a Neat account, then the destination dropdown will be grayed out and the only option for saving files is to your computer hard drive. -
When you save files to your computer's hard drive, you can name the files, select the file type, and choose the specific location on your hard drive where you want to save them.
Please Note: You can either send items to Neat or save them on your computer but not both. However, you can import items saved on your computer into Neat.
How can I edit scanned files in the Desktop Application before saving them?
Before saving files to your Neat account or your computer, you can rotate, adjust, crop, change the page order, and delete pages of your scanned images.To Rotate:
- Select a file you want to rotate from your recently scanned files. The file will appear in the image editor.
- Click the Rotate button to the left of the image to rotate the image a quarter turn clockwise. Click Rotate until the image is oriented as desired.
- Click Save to finalize the result.
To Adjust Skew:
- Select a file you want to adjust from your recently scanned files. The file will appear in the image editor.
- Click the Crop button indicated below to view the skew adjustment buttons. They appear in the center of the image in a semitransparent rectangle. Press the plus (+) or minus (-) buttons to fine-tune the skew as needed. Use the intersecting guidelines for added precision.
- When finished, check you are not cropping anything out of the image before you click Save to save your changes.
To Crop:
- Select a file you want to crop from your recently scanned files. The file will appear in the image editor.
- Click the Crop button indicated below to edit out portions of the image along the border. Use the blue "handles" seen at the top, bottom, sides, and corners to resize the crop area.
- When you click Save, anything outside the blue "handles" will be removed from the image.
To Change Page Order:
- To reverse the order of pages in a multi-page document, click the Sort button at the bottom of the page column which appears to the right of the displayed document.
- To rearrange page order manually, click on a page in the column and drag it up or down to relocate the page in the file.
To Delete a Single Page:
- To delete a single page within a multi-page document, select that page from the page column to the right of the displayed file.
- Click the Trash icon at the bottom of the column.
- Click Yes to confirm you want to delete that page.
What do I do if my Neat scanner won’t connect?
If you are having trouble connecting your Neat scanner to the Neat Desktop Application, then disconnect your scanner and make sure you have the latest driver for your scanner installed.If you have difficulty installing your Neat scanner driver, then check out this Help Center article for assistance.
How do I clean and calibrate my Neat scanner with the Neat Desktop Application?
To Clean a Neat Scanner:
- Click Scan in the menu bar.
Windows: Mac: - Load a cleaning sheet into the scanner and click Clean.
- The scanner will pull the cleaning sheet through the scanner. When done, a success message will pop up in the Desktop Application.
To Calibrate a Neat Scanner:
- Click Scan in the menu bar.
Windows: Mac: - Load a calibration sheet into the scanner and click Calibrate.
- The scanner will pull the calibration sheet through the scanner. When done, a success message will pop up in the Desktop Application.
What is the View tab for?
The View tab provides several helpful options to manage your Neat Desktop Application.Clicking the View tab allows you to:
- Reload This Page - Reloads the Neat Desktop Application without having to close and re-open the application
- Toggle Developer Tools - Allows access to developer features that can aid in troubleshooting technical issues on the scanning side of the application
- Open Neat Dev Tools - Allows access to developer features that can aid in troubleshooting technical issues on the Neat Cloud side of the application
- Actual Size - Returns you to default size after you have used Zoom In or Zoom Out
- Zoom In/Zoom Out - Alters the view of the entire Neat Desktop Application to appear further away or closer
- Toggle Full Screen - Turns full-screen mode on or off
